How many porta potties does a festival or large event need?

Use 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for the first 4 hours. Add 1 unit per 100 guests for a longer event. Add 1 more per 100 guests when alcohol is sold. For an 8-hour festival with beer sales, that works out to 20 units for every 500 guests.

This is the Jack Rental Works sizing method, applied to big crowds. Count your expected peak attendance for the day, not total tickets for the weekend. Round each step up.

2,500751004–519–25

How we got 1,000 guests with alcohol: base 20, plus 10 for the long day, plus 10 for alcohol, equals 40 toilets. For 10,000 or more guests, the same method scales up, and Jack builds the plan with you cluster by cluster. Plug in your own hours and crowd below, or read the full porta potty sizing guide.

Method: Jack Rental Works sizing method; construction minimums from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1; accessible-unit share from 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Confirm with your permit office, venue or safety manager — this is not legal advice.

How many wheelchair-accessible units does each cluster need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, call for at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, rounded up. A cluster of 10 needs 1. A cluster of 21 needs 2. Spreading 40 toilets into 4 clusters of 10 means 4 accessible units, not 2.

This is the detail most large-event plans miss. The 5% is counted per cluster, not across the whole site. Read the rule on the U.S. Access Board site.

Each wheelchair-accessible porta potty we rent is designed to ADA dimensions. It measures about 62 by 62 inches, with a 60-inch turning space and a door about 34 inches wide. Set it on firm, level ground at the end of the row nearest the path. Confirm with your permit office, venue or safety manager — this is not legal advice.

How should porta potty clusters be laid out on the grounds?

Spread toilets into clusters of about 10 to 20 units so no guest walks more than a few minutes. Put 1 handwash station per 4 toilets at the exit end of each row. Leave a truck lane to every cluster. Keep clusters away from food booths and downwind of seating when you can.

Near the crowd, not on top of it

Place clusters at the edge of each main area: the stage field, the arena stands, the midway and the start line.

Doors face the walkway

Set units in straight rows with doors toward a wide path. Lines form along the path, not into traffic.

Handwash at the exit

Put stations where people walk out. Guests wash when the sink is on the way, not behind the row.

A service lane

Our pump truck must reach every unit. Keep vendor trailers and parked cars out of that lane.

Lights after dark

Units have no electric light. Light poles or tower lights over each cluster help guests at night.

Wind-ready

Spring gusts in Midland often top 40 mph. We stake or strap every unit in an open field.

Do you service porta potties during the event?

Yes. Jack Rental Works recommends mid-event service for any event over 3 days or with 250 or more guests. Each visit costs $65 per unit and includes a pump-out, cleaning and a restock of paper and sanitizer. A standard unit is rated by the manufacturer for about 200 uses between services.

A 2-day rodeo or a weekend festival usually gets one service visit overnight. A 5-day county fair may get a visit every night. Heat speeds up odor, and Midland summer highs often run 95 to 105°F, so June through August events may need more visits.

Need a sink-equipped unit for VIP or performer areas? Ask about a 2- or 3-stall restroom trailer. Trailers need a 110V outlet and a water hose.

What happens on the pre-event site walk?

For a large event, Jack walks the grounds with your organizer about 1 to 3 weeks before the date. Together you mark each cluster, the accessible spots, the truck lane and the delivery gate. Drop and pickup times are set on the quote. Bring your site map and vendor layout.

  1. Share the basics. Expected peak crowd, hours each day, alcohol sales, and number of days.
  2. Walk the site. Mark each cluster with flags or paint and pin each one on a map.
  3. Check the ground. Accessible units need firm, level ground and a smooth path.
  4. Plan the lanes. Confirm the pump truck can reach every cluster during the event.
  5. Set the schedule. Drop usually happens 1 to 2 days before gates open. We run Mon–Sat only, so plan around Sunday.
  6. Get one quote. Jack texts an itemized quote you can forward to your board or sponsor.

Do we need a city permit for porta potties at a public event?

A large public event in a Midland city park goes through the City of Midland special event process. Restroom counts are often part of that review. Placing units on a public street, alley or sidewalk generally needs City approval too. On private property, a permit is usually not needed for the units themselves.

Start with the City of Midland website and ask about the special event application. Events in Odessa or other towns follow their own city or county rules. We can send a written unit list for your application. Confirm with your permit office, venue or safety manager — this is not legal advice.

How do needs change for rodeos, races, car shows and concerts?

The crowd pattern changes the plan. A 5K or mud run sees its biggest lines in the 30 minutes before the start. A rodeo peaks at intermission. A car show spreads use across a long, hot day. A concert peaks between sets, and beer sales add 1 unit per 100 guests.

Event typeWhen lines peakPlan tip
5K, fun run or mud runBefore the startBig cluster at the start line, small cluster at the finish
RodeoIntermission and between eventsClusters at each end of the stands
County fairEvenings and weekendsClusters by the midway and the livestock barns
Car showMidday heatShade-side placement, extra handwash stations
Outdoor concertBetween setsAdd the alcohol units; light every cluster

Mud runs need extra handwash stations, since runners come back muddy. For a mid-size community event under 500 guests, see our event porta potty rentals for parties and church events.

More questions about Festival and Large Event Porta Potties in Midland and West Texas

Can you clean them every night during a 3-day festival?

Yes. We schedule service visits between event days, usually after the gates close or before they open. Each visit pumps the tank, cleans the unit and restocks paper and sanitizer. A service visit is $65 per unit. We recommend mid-event service for any event over 3 days or with 250 or more guests.

How many uses can one unit take before it needs servicing?

The manufacturer rates a standard porta potty at about 200 uses between services. A busy festival can reach that in one long day. That is why we size for your peak crowd and set a service visit between days. A handwash station holds about 36 gallons and gives about 400 hand washes per fill.

Do the accessible units have a sink inside?

No. Our wheelchair-accessible units are designed to ADA dimensions with a 60-inch turning space, grab bars and a ground-level floor. They have no sink inside. Place a hand-washing station right next to each accessible unit, on a firm, level path, so guests can wash without crossing grass or gravel.

Will you walk the site with us before the event?

Yes, for large events we walk the grounds with your organizer. We mark cluster spots, the truck lane for service, and level ground for accessible units. Bring your site map and vendor layout. In Midland and Odessa this is usually a short visit scheduled Mon–Sat during business hours.

Can you stake units down on an open fairground in spring wind?

Yes. We stake or strap every unit we set. Midland gusts commonly top 40 mph during March and April dust events, and a wide-open fairground takes the full force. Tell us the ground surface for each cluster, such as dirt, grass, caliche or pavement, so our crew brings the right tie-downs.

Can we add more units the week of the event if ticket sales jump?

Call as soon as your numbers change. Adding units is often possible, but large weekends book up, so earlier is safer. We will update the itemized quote, and the 5-or-more discount of $10 per unit applies to the new units on the same event order.
